An important part of Chiltern International Fire’s investment programme over the past two years was the complete refurbishment of our 1.1m3 furnace. This incorporates a highly sophisticated data logging and control system to give clients a fast, efficient service.
Deputy Technical Manager Mark Cummings said, ‘Even in times of recession, manufacturers must review their product offering and invest in research and development, but when funding is tight they must spend their R&D budgets wisely. Indicative testing is a relatively inexpensive way of checking and developing a product’s fire resistance capabilities without going straight to a full-scale prototype.’
Our small furnace is very adaptable for ad hoc work and can cater for a wide range of application and scenarios, for example a new door frame product or early warning fire alarm systems. Another advantage is one of timescale – small furnace testing offers short lead times, while an early indication of performance will help save money in the initial stages of product development.
Mark added, ‘For some products, there are additional benefits of using the small scale furnace, for example with penetration seals, when we can test in horizontal and vertical planes at the same time. This offers further savings in time and cost.’
